Still a true believer: Why I support President Obama's agenda

As a volunteer who labored joyfully on the Obama campaign, remembering the vision that began two years ago is critical now more than ever.

It's all too easy for us to jump into the fear void with those who can see no further. I understand it is near impossible at times for human's to stick to a difficult course. The fact that our president sees the bigger picture and works under that premise is a bonus that may be presently obscured from some of our visions. The time is near past to shake yourself awake, and remember, who you are as a part of that vision.

Being a Christian, I follow the teachings of Christ to the best of my ability each day. While Jesus and many of his spiritual descendants labored to help the poor, they also call forth for us to rise up and that His help and love is here for all to recieve. We should not selfishly cling to it, reserving it for close family and friends, but deliver it back out there. We seem to have forgotton as people of faith, we ARE the human manifestation of God's love on earth, and as such are His emmisaries.

Our under/over estimated beleaguered president (whom we like to forget is just a man, not Jesus after all) labors under much oppression of fact, and I believe an earnest Christian heart. He did not walk alone into the White House, he was escorted by US when we were full of God's spirit. Whatever our technical religion, race or creed, I believe it was divine provenance that helped us in that walk.

My question to all is, what has happened to us? It's as if we've fallen asleep.

I strenuously include myself in that category because at some point after his election I was exhausted, and somewhere in me thought-

"Okay let's see you do your stuff Mr. President, while I rest up for a bit".

Of course a bit has turned into apathy for most of us. The problem is, he never said he could do it alone-what man or woman could. If I am perceiving failure in my president, I must also perceive my own failure and complacency.

It seemed to have manifested fully back in the eighties after Janet Jackson's song was co-opted into a narcissistic anthem. It's now the common nature of man to contemplate our government under the premise of "What have you done for me lately?" That premise manifests differently for each of us, Republican, Democrat, Libertarian, Independent and Green party alike, depending on individual need and or bias.

We haven't given much thought to the bigger picture, tacitly leaving that to our president to fend for. The fact is, however resistant we are, we are more than our navels, and need to look UP every now and then, and reach out to our fellow man. When you are reaching out, you rarely notice whether or not your own hand is empty... and indeed it isn't, it is filled with holy human spirit.

It was no small anouncement when then Senator Obama uttered the words "We are the ones we've been waiting for". So... where are WE and who's driving the car? The presidency is only a small part of governance, there are several branches. With several million people squeezed into this USA produced auto isn't it time to help drive?

When did the rights of corporations become so esteemed that they could just hop in their Hummers and ride roughshod over our political system and regulatory agencies. When did the people trying to jump in front of the vehichle become un-american? Why aren't we standing beside them?

Where in the bible (or any other religious doctrine) does it say to go forth to poison the seed on fruited plain with pesticides and chemicals... or go forth and strip mine the mountain tops majesty... or go forth and pollute the air we share... or destroy fishes in the waters and the bounty of the earth entrusted to us... go forth and harvest precious stones while children starve nearby... go forth, buy up all the rights to and encase in toxic plastic bottles and sell the water I have given you, while the poor die of thirst. And, just WHAT exactly is a humane way to murder a man for possibly murdering another man (because as we know the criminal justice system never chooses to murder the 'wrong' man).

We have created and nurtured an isolated society. My next door neighbor could be christian, muslim, jewish, hindu, buddhist, atheist. He/she could be starving, ill, beating his kids, stealing from pension funds, struggling to pay the electric bill, about to lose his home... the list is endless. We are outraged that government isn't stopping this, and then... we're outraged when it does... The one thing we seem to have forgotten, is "they" are "us" (to paraphrase an accidental profundity by Christine O'Donnell).

Any form of stepping into the void and attempting to correct society's wrong's is going to be a mess. So get a firm grip on yourself. Is there a person alive, that would honestly want their child to be president today?

I think it's time for a little self accountability. Time to put down that bottle of ambien and wake up.

Obviously, you can go vote on Tuesday (I'll be there as a poll volunteer), but bigger than that... we have to get off our butts and help be a part of the solution. Get out of bad you, poor me brain and help create. If there is time enough to complain, there's time enough to volunteer for what you believe in.

If Jesus were here maybe it'd go something like this- (verily I say unto you:) be a part of the solution, help create your world. Volunteer for what you believe in, any movement on your part creates change.... soup kitchens, hospices, retirement homes, the gulf clean-up, habitat for humanity, clean energy, freedom from corruption, read/tutor at schools, campaign, the list is eternal... just turn off the TV and go help your fellow man.

The point is, as my grandmother used to say, "Idle hands are the devils workshop."

Don't give up on the world, there are good public servants out there (and yes many are politicians. Put down that Enquirer and go online, or go to the free public Library and research their positions and records, educate yourself, and don't forget to vote.

Every thought and action you produce matters and creates.

What will you create today?

Great hub. I think the anti-Obama hype is exagerrated by the media. It seems like most Americans are disillusioned in general, but I doubt they're ready to go back to the GOP. I hope I'm not wrong.

Thank you, Dorothe. I get so confused by the anger coming from opponents of President Obama. They act like he is trying to hurt people when all of his efforts seem to be intended to help. We seem to have forgotten that we are "our brothers' keepers."

You are a Christian? I am not doubting that but I wonder if you read the Christian Coalition voting guide? God would not burden us with the tremendous load Obama has put us through! God blessed our forefathers with this country of freedom and would in now way put someone like Obama and his cronies in our way to destroy that! Obama makes a mockery of Christians and seems to cuddle up to Muslims at every chance! I hope you consider this as you work for policies the majority of America has screamed NO to!

Thanks for your opinion J and the American

(sorry J, couldn't resist:)

Sir American Romance, If you read a bit more of the easily acquired public record on economics and the past administration's dealings, you may realize where the "load" originated.

I get my faith in Jesus from the words of Christ in the new testament and not the Christian Coalition voting guide. Anyone that falls prey to the bias of a bigoted organization would indeed see boogymen behind everyone or thing different from themselves. I prefer to keep my heart open to all the forms in which the word of God and the ways of Christ may enter my being. I am unaffraid of fabricated fear, and feel much sadness for your dark enemy filled world. Maybe one day, the love of Christ will be allowed entrance into your heart, in the same manner He allows all to enter his. Go in peace. D.

Interesting, I did not judge you because I am a Christian, but you just judged me???? Soooo you have no faith in a team of Christians who research each and every person running for office but instead choose to believe the liberal anti Christian media? I am just asking so please do not be so judgemental with your next reply?

When Democrats took over in Jan 07 unemployment was 4.1%, the Dow jones was over 12000 and GDP was at a sustainable level. 4 years of Democrat policies put us here! Also since you are so informed I suppose you all ready knew Bush broke a record for 52 months of sustained growth in employment........Oh forgot CNBC doesn't report that sort of thing!

Sorry to disappoint but I don't watch CNBC.

I do check reliable nonpartisan sources like factcheck.org...

In that same Jan 2007 you quoted (from? -Fox perhaps). President Bush in his state of the union according to factcheck.org: "He proposed a 20 percent cut in gasoline use, which turns out to be only an 11 percent decrease from current levels. The President claimed to have cut the federal deficit in half, which hasn't happened. He trumpeted the 7.2 million jobs created since the worst of the 2003 job slump, ignoring the 2.7 million jobs lost during the first part of his tenure. And once again Bush spoke of "energy independence," though the nation's dependence on imported oil has grown steadily since Bush took office despite all the talk and enactment of his energy legislation."

We could go back and forth with this draining garbage forever, but it's not really worth it to me. Hopefully you have better things to do as well.

We just have different world views, period. The only difference I can see between the two of us is that I prayed just as much for President Bush's journey through the oval office as I do for President Obama's and my focus is more on the rights of individuals than the rights of big corporations who are not in and of themselves "individual" humans deserving of special exemption or treatment.

For me, it's a constitutional issue that has little to do with God per se. In as such the political/God connection has more to do with the social issues involving poverty, and doing public harm. We have forgotten how to take care of our downtrodden. It has become a way of life to step on and over them in pursuit of wealth.... it doesn't feel very Christ-like to me. Just my opinion.

By the way, I'm happy to have you here to vent your views.

Forgive me if I don't come back at you, have to work the polls tomorrow.

Peace be with you. D.

I do believe your sincere, but I wonder if while helping those downtrodden you could get back the 12 million they spent in Las Vegas last year, according to tracking of the welfare cards in CA. or the 400 thousand spent in Hawaii? We certainly do have different views, and it is fascinating to me! I have no idea how any American can go around thinking Democrats help people! Look at the millions on entitlement programs thanks to Democrats, how has their lives improved over the past 20 years? Lets remove entitlement, help big business and put the lazy back to work!.........of course you will need to vote Republican for that to happen! Psst take off early today because your efforts will be soooo futile! no winning for democrats on this eve!

For several thousands of years before Jesus, God was running the Earth and its people. He did a pretty poor job of it. He couldn't lead Moses to the promised land in forty years. He couldn't even give us the tablets with his Ten Commandments on it. He threw Adam and Eve out of the Garden Of Eden, even though the Garden was infested with the devil and there were no angels to protect Adam and Eve.

He blames everyone that followed Adam and Eve for their misbehavior. He flooded the Earth because we were more like Cain than Abel.

Why would Jesus do a better job with us than his Father?

Obama begged for the presidency, and he won it because he promised he would change Washington. He did change it, he made it worse. If you want to trace the load, it was during the Clinton administration when the democrats wanted everyone to own a home, whether they could afford it or not. It was Freddie and Fannie that enabled the housing market to collapse. It was also Freddie and Fannie that Congress and president Obama exempted from the financial reform bill that they passed.

The democrats blame the republicans for blocking their bills. That is exactly what the democrats did when the republicans were in control.

Instead of wasting, time, money and resources on health reform, the congress and the president should have spent the time on fixing the economy and getting jobs back for the people. Not stimulus jobs, but the same kind of jobs that were lost in the economic meltdown.

There was no excuse for that ill choice of health reform to take precedence away from the existing major problem of the country.

Obama has done to the country and not for the country. His acts while in office are those made by a beginner, and not an accomplished president.

He spent two years neglecting his duties and obligations in the senate, while he beg the country to make him president. During those two years the country went to near collapse. The guilt for that has to be shared with both democrats and republicans, as well as Congress and the president. They were more interested in winning the election than they were in running the country.

So I disagree with you on both your religious and your political positions.

Remember opinion is my name.

Happy Thanksgiving

Hey, Thanks for your opinion Mr. Duck. I went to a couple of your Hubs and was surprised to discover I actually agreed with most of the content.

Of course, I don't agree on most of your commentary on mine but that's cool:)

I, like yourself wish there were more political options and would not have been as heavily involved if it weren't for our local politics. I researched, personally became acquainted with the players and options and became of the mind that if I weren't going to become involved then I should shut the heck up...

I respect your opinions, but am a tiny bit suspect of anyone who puts it out there anonomously... no real skin in the game ey...
